What is a Home Transformation Consultant?
Thanks for asking. I am an independent source of knowledge and experience spanning everything to do with property.
We all deserve a home that works properly for how we live and who we live with. It makes us happier people.
I come with an open mind to help you create a home that you will love and is much more than just looks. Plus, I always illustrate my proposals in 3D because it is makes everything so easy to visualise.
How a home functions is super important.
Every home needs a combination of elements to create this magic – invariably stuff and storage are good starting points even before you consider if you need to extend or reconfigure.
The fact that I am independent is key.
If you talk to a builder , they will want to build and an architect will experiment with your money – well, some of them really do!
And by the way, my favourite moniker is #SpaceSaviour.
My partner wants to move, but I don’t. What do you advise?
It’s important to understand all the pros and cons of moving or staying put. That’s a useful process for all the family.
Having an independent ear (that would be me), not only adds aspects you might not have thought of, but helps pin down what things are important for you.
One reason for not moving, for example, is that you know your current neighbours and the location, and they might be a more important reason for staying than you realised – after all you don’t know new neighbours in advance!
Why should I work with you?
You already know that you’re not in love with your home.
You’ve got lots of ideas and saved images, but you can’t put your finger on what needs to change.
We start at the beginning to work out what you don’t like and pin down what your lifestyle is like, or what you’d like it to be.
I explore all the options: looking at your furniture, your décor, how you use your space, what is taking up space (that might even be walls!), where you need and want more space.
It’s about defining your goal and exploring all the ways to achieve that – so it’s part of the process to decide if you need to build, or if you need different furniture and so on.
It’s not just one specialism.
A builder, an architect or an interior designer will only look at their particular area.
Am I committed to doing what you suggest?
No, absolutely not!
It’s your home and you are in charge, but I will give you all the vision and solutions, so it’s easy for you to make the best choices.
How much time do you spend in my home?
The last couple of years have changed how a lot of us work and we are all much more savvy with video, so there’s usually no need to visit your home. Plus, I value your privacy.
I may send in a specialist to do an accurate plan to start with, or maybe you take photos or videos. It depends on what we decide together.
Do you only work on whole house projects?
No, it’s totally fine to look at just one room, but even then, that room connects with other rooms, so it’s very important for me to have an overview.
An unloved room is often the result of how other spaces are being used – so the problem is actually a different room, if that makes sense?
I just need more space, so surely I have to build an extension?
That might be the solution, or it might not.
Many houses have ‘dead space’ being taken up by thick old walls, chimney breasts or areas that are only used for moving around.
Having too many doors can also be a ‘space eater”. Storage is a biggie too.
An extension always has an impact on adjacent rooms, sometimes negative. Before adding more space, it’s really important to look hard at the space you’ve already got.
What type of extension is best?
There’s no simple answer to that, but I always look first at reconfiguring the layout you already have. That should always be the starting point.
If reconfiguring turns out be insufficient, then there are ground floor extensions, loft conversions, dormer windows, oriel windows. The list is endless.
My 3D renders give you all the vision to see what impact changes and additions would make, long before you even approach a builder or architect.
So when it comes to making the big decision, so have all the information you need.
Shouldn’t I just get quotes from several builders?
Of course, you can.
But building might not be your best solution. And builders do what they do. They will build for you.
They won’t tell you don’t need an extension!
Plus, they can only quote properly, if you know what you want.
Is space the same as square footage?
Yes and no. Well, it can be.
Let me explain.
Perceived space is very important too. What does that mean?
Giving the impression of space, and maximising the perception of space is very important to make your home perfect.
This includes considering light and lighting, the size of windows, window dressings, mirrors and not accidentally blocking views within rooms.
What if I prefer to sell and move?
That’s entirely your call. But any improvements you make will make your current home more attractive to buyers. One of those ‘improvements’ might be preparing your home to go on the market – download my 9 Reasons guide to read about that in detail – it’s not just having a tidy up and running round with the hoover!
For me, one of the best compliments is when a client decides not to move, even when they were definitely in the ‘List It’ camp at the start.
